I intended to make full use of the vocation, however, looking through my performance from the last twenty days. I failed again, I found that I do not have strong will to carry my plan out. I am lazy, too lazy. I slept a lot for the past twenty days, spent a lot of in watching movies, playing computer games. However, I was suffering, I was trying to make a change. Every night I lay on the bed, I am planning what I am going to do the next day.I really wanted to make a difference. But every morning I did the same things. Pushed back the clock, went back to the bed, and slept until I cannot bear the hunger. After I got up, the first thing I did is opening the computer to surf the internet, watch movies, TV series. I tried my best to get back on the books, but it only lasted for ten or twenty minutes. I am ashamed about myself. What is worse, I did badly in the last semester. The CAP is just 4.3, many of my classmates got 4.8 or even 5.0. I don't know how to speak to my family,my sisters and parents. I am disappointed by myself. Today, one of my classmates said:" once you are a Chinese, you must got an 'A+' for the maths module(MA1505). I had nothing to say, I was just like the worst in the campus. I cannot bear the fact any more. I need to make a complete change from now on, I cannot keep living like this. I am ambitious, I have goals. I want to an outstanding undergraduate in NUS, I want to the representation of NUS. I need NUS to be proud of that I was an alumni in a couple of years. To be an ordinary one is not the responsibility of my life. I must be outstanding. As I once said:" There are billions of people passed through the whole history, but a few left there names in the history. Most of people are born quietly, and tragically, they died quietly and peacefully. The other even don't there once was a person except the local administration officer. I do not want to be the majority, I need to be the minority, I must, and I will left my name in the history book. I will, I will, I will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I will change from the next second, completely, a different me will be born with my action. My actions will prove what I have said. I will be the minority, I am going to be, I will be!!!!!!!!
Maybe, I will use this blog to record my progress, sweat, tears and cheers!

The academic essay
EQ versus IQ
When an undergraduate gets an “A+” for each of his modules, he/she is praised to have high IQ. However, after someone has done an almost perfect presentation, he/she is said to have high EQ by his/her classmates. Sometimes it is confusing whether it is IQ or EQ that results in the performance of an undergraduate. Which one is more important for an undergraduate? Actually, both EQ and IQ are very important to an undergraduate, but they contribute in different aspects of a student. However, when they are combined together, their enhancement will be maximized to the overall development of the student.
From the side of EQ, it helps a student motivate himself/herself, keep optimistic to cope with stress and gain good relationships with others. According to Hang (1999), “emotional intelligence consists of five qualities: self-awareness, mood management, self-motivation, impulse control and interpersonal skills.” Firstly, a student probably would be bored with some mandatory modules because they have to pass them. According to Chan(2004),This kind of motivation is called negative motivation because the motivation comes from outside. It is only self-motivation that makes the student keep passion to get good academic results in the modules which he/she does not like. Moreover, self-motivation drives him/her to continue rather than give up when he/she meets some problems. Secondly, good mood management plays an important role in helping a student cope with stress which comes from exams, assignments, relationships with others and after-class activities. A student with good mood management will keep an optimistic attitude towards the stress and handle it properly so that stress can motivate him/her instead of ruining him/her. Last but not least, interpersonal skills help a student get along well with his/her classmates and teachers and make a lot of friends. Therefore, he/she can study collaboratively, which is more efficient than studying alone. In a word, EQ enhances the development of an undergraduate through motivating him/her, keeping good attitude to cope with stress and keeping good relationship with others.
In contrast, IQ helps a student think correctly, adapt effectively to the environment quickly and learn from experiences. According to the report “Intelligence: knowns and unkowns (Ulric et al.,1996), intellectual intelligence is defined as “the ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forms of reasoning, to overcome obstacles by thinking”. From the definition, it is clear that the essence of IQ is the method of thinking. One main purpose of courses in universities is to teach the student to think logically and creatively. Hence, high IQ will help the student get success in academics. For example, a graduate may not use the advanced mathematics any more, but surely he/she still benefits from the way of thinking developed in math modules, which is mainly the contribution of IQ. In addition, that IQ helps the student adapt effectively to the environment (one part of IQ) will minimize the period of adaptation and maximize the efficiency of leaning. This competence is much more important to freshmen and exchange students because they face to a large change in environment. Furthermore, IQ keeps students to think after one task is done. He/she will draw lessons from failures and experience from success. These will make him/her do better next time, and that is the reason why the undergraduate makes progress. In a nutshell, IQ makes contributions to teach the student think in a right manner, adapt the environment and learn from experiences.
However, IQ and EQ are not exclusive. Their contributions are maximized when they are combined together. In other words, they complete each other to enhance the performance of an undergraduate. For instance, EQ provides the student the motivation to learn some courses and IQ supplies him/her the way of thinking to work out problems about the courses. Only when these two processes take place simultaneously will the student get good results. The absence of one side will deduct from the whole effort. A lot of students often say one sentence after examination, “The questions are simple, but I did badly.” The questions are simple means they can handle it, but they fail because their EQ is not high enough to answer the paper well under the circumstance of examination. This is an example that the absence of EQ decreases the overall performance. To summarize, for an undergraduate fully developed in all aspects, both high EQ and IQ are needed.
In conclusion, EQ and IQ both play an important role in the performance of the undergraduate, but in different aspects. However, when they are combined together, the talent of the student will be maximized. As a whole, an undergraduate fully developed in all aspects needs the contributions made from EQ as well as IQ.

Summary of " Motivation for Mandatory Courses
The article “Motivation for Mandatory Courses” is written by Professor Elsie Chan and published in the CDTL Brief in 2004. In this article, it clearly explains what the problem of negative motivation for mandatory for undergraduates is, why it comes from and the way of solving this problem. Firstly, the negative motivation is defined that “students are often motivated to succeed in the class only because they need to pass the module.” The author stresses that the intrinsic motivation helps the students do their best in modules. There are four main perspectives on intrinsic motivation: competence, curiosity, autonomy and internalized motivation. After the understanding of root of intrinsic motivation, the professor provides some practical ways to motivate students from his experience. He says that teachers could create a positive learning environment for students. Teachers can help students set a goal and action plan for learning, simultaneously; they can also help the student overcome a passive approach to the subjects and help students increase their sense of competence. For example, teaching with the help of multimedia tools, formation of discussion groups and problem solving project will excite the intrinsic motivation of students. Furthermore, the basic principles of motivation is through clear communication, setting tasks to engage students, creating situations that allow students make and correct mistakes and displaying the enthusiasm for the subject matter. Finally, he drew a conclusion that the negative motivation can be turned into positive motivation by creating a positive leaning environment with the knowledge of the root of motivation.

Movie Review

Movie review of “A beautiful mind”
“A beautiful mind” is an excellent film so that I have watched for a few times. It tells the story about the famous mathematician John Nash. He made a very significant contribution in game theory when he was very young. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed as schizophrenia when he was doing very well in his career. With the persistence of mathematics and the help from his wife-- Alicia, he gradually got rid of the disease. Moreover, he got the Noble Prize in economics in 1994. It showed us the life of the great mathematician. It also led me some thinking about him. What makes him be a Noble Prize winner besides his talent? Maybe there are two main aspects.
The first reason is his desire and persistence in mathematics. In the film, his inspiration came from the process in pursuing the beautiful girls. Then he spent the whole winter to make the mathematical proofs. These behaviors show that he is addicted to mathematics. He is a genius, but if he do not put his heart into mathematics, how can he make the breakthrough in the game theory? Even when he was ill, he still tried to do some mathematical work, the desire to study mathematics drove him to work continuously until making some breakthrough.
The second reason is the support from his wife. Nash was lucky as he got a bright brain.
Unfortunately, he also got the horrible disease---schizophrenia. He was tortured by this disease for almost thirty years. He struggled between the real and imagined world. In the film, the sorrow was visualized by three virtual characters. The pain cannot be described only by words. It is his wife who always accompanied him. She was dangerous because Nash might hurt her. However, she did not leave him alone; she always tried her best to help him get rid of the imagined world. After years’ effort, Nash finally kicked the schizophrenia away. Moreover, he won the Nobel Prize. The journey was really harsh, with the support from his wife, he eventually went through it. If there was no his wife, maybe Nash will never became healthy again.
In addition, the film’s title is “a beautiful mind”, whose mind it refers to? A lot of people think it refers to the Nash’s mind because he went through a harsh time, but I personally think that it refers to Alicia’s. At the end of the film, Nash made a speech on the stage. He said: “Today that I am here because of you.” Here “you” obviously refered to Alicia. Furthermore, what Alicia has done is really remarkable. She always helped him struggle with the disease. Therefore, I think the title refers to Alicia’ mind, not Nash’s.
Overall, this is a good film, for both the contents and the performance. It will bring the audiences pleasure as well as some thinking. It is worth watching.

problem and solution
Nowadays, emotional intelligence is emphasized to be very important to the success of a person, and it is believed that family and society can help the young develop their emotional intelligence. However, there are some obstacles to be removed.
In my opinion, there are two main problems that make the help from family and society not very effective. (I just take the situation in China as example.) The first one is the influence of Internet-----the virtual reality. Many teenagers are addicted into the virtual reality. They spend a large amount of time facing with a machine and seldom communicate with peers or even their parents, the interpersonal skills are very poor. Secondly, the one –child policy leads to the lack of the sense of share. There is only one child in most families in China. Many children are spoiled by parents and grandparents. He/she can easily get whatever he/she wants and he/she does not need to share with others. That is the reason why many undergraduates have problems of the relationship with classmates in China. Besides, the workload for teenagers is relatively high in China. Studying takes up the main part of his life so that there is not enough time and chances for teenagers to interact with peers.
These problems prevent the development the emotional intelligence of teenagers seriously and cause the help not effective. How to solve the problems?
The basic solution may be to encourage teenagers to communicate with peers more frequently and spend less time online. The second is that parents and relatives should not spoil him/her and should develop his capacity of independence and cooperate with others. If possible, the workload of studying should be reduced to leave students more time to develop their interests and emotional intelligence. The fundamental rule is to provide them more chances to know the importance of emotional intelligence, spend more time with peers, know him/her and others and accumulate the experience of interpersonal skills. With the guide of this basic rule, I think the problems will be solved.

cause and effect
High emotional intelligence will enhance the contribution of all professions, nothing difference for the new engineers-----engineering graduates. What are the effects that if the engineering graduates have high emotional intelligence? Firstly, the good management and impulse control will keep the graduates always making rational decision.
In the work of engineering, mood and impulse should not be involved in the decision making, as the irrational decision may cause disasters. Secondly, self-motivation makes engineering graduates keep passion on the engineering job. The engineering job is not as colorful as the university life. It is all about data and calculations, graduates with self-motivation give their desire to be interested in it and work well. Thirdly, the interpersonal skills will help the graduates get well with their colleagues. Hence, they can collaborate and make full of their strength so that they can maximize their competences to work out the best project. The fact is that any building in the world is not built by only one engineer. Therefore, the interpersonal skills help the new engineers a lot. On the contrast, without the high emotional intelligence, maybe he will be bored by the job and even quit it. How can he do well in it? In a nutshell, high emotional intelligence strongly improves the performance of the new engineers---- engineering graduates.

compare and contrast (2nd Draft)
Both emotional intelligence and intellectual intelligence are very important to the development of an undergraduate, but they contribute in different ways.
According to Daniel Goleman, who wrote an influential book on emotional intelligence, emotional intelligence consists of five qualities: self-awareness, mood management, self-motivation, impulse control and interpersonal skills. Among theses qualities, self-motivation is the critical quality for an undergraduate. Anyone cannot like all the courses in the university. It is self-motivation that makes him/her keep passion on the modules which he/she does not like. What is more, it is self-motivation that makes him/her get a good result. Secondly, good mood management plays an important role in coping with stress which comes from exams, assignments, relationship with others and after-class activities. A student with good mood management will keep an optimistic attitude to stress and handle properly so that stress can motivate him/her rather than ruin him/her. Thirdly, interpersonal skills helps a student get well with his/her classmates and teachers and make a lot of friends. Therefore, they can study collaboratively, which is more efficient than studying alone. In addition, he/she will get CCA much more easily as he/she can get into the activity group easily.
Respectively, according to the report “Intelligence: Knowns and Unknowns” of APA in1955, intellectual intelligence was defined as the ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forms of reasoning, to overcome obstacles by taking thought. From this definition, there is no doubt that it contributes to the academic issues of an undergraduate as the essence of intelligence is the way of thinking. Just like in mathematics, it requires the student to think logically and creatively. Without intellectual intelligence, students cannot do this job well; even emotional intelligence does not work. Another important aspect is learning through experience, everyone has no competence besides eating and drinking when he/she was born. Learning from experience gives people the power to make progress; it is the same to the undergraduate.
In conclusion, both emotional intelligence and intellectual intelligence play important roles in the development of the undergraduate, but in different aspects.

What is life?
What is life? Why did I come to the world? How should I live in this world?
These questiones bothered me since when I was in primary school. I often thought about these when I was free.
In the famous prose “What I Have Lived For”, Bertrand Russell said that: “Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.” Longing for love, knowledge and pity for the suffering of mankind are the things that make his life meaningful. How about myself?
After years’ meditation, I gradually got an idea of life. Life is the precious chance given by our parents to exert ourselves, to perform ourselves and to improve ourselves. However, the time is very limited; there is an end not far away. Within this period of time, we have the power to fulfill it, or leave it blank. Everyone is just like a painter as long as he was born; all the materials for painting are prepared. Life is the process that we complete the painting before we die. We can fill in happiness, sorrow, glory and even evil.
Someone may affect us, but we are our own painter all the time, we have the absolute power to decide what we should draw.
In a nutshell, what we should do is just carefully draw every part of the picture, complete it without regret.
The meaning of life is just the process of drawing!
